When I learned about Ayurveda a few years ago, a big light bulb went on; I finally realized why I didn’t love Fall. While everyone else was raving about changing leaves and crisp weather, I felt unsettled and chilled to the bone. According to Ayurveda, my strongly Kapha Pitta constitution didn’t love the Vata coolness, dryness, windiness, and transition so common in Fall.

I’ve learned to balance the Vata by focusing on warming, grounding practices like doing yoga in a heated room, sitting in the steam room at the gym, and staying inside when it is particularly windy. I eat more hot meals (versus salads) and more starchy root vegetables.

One of my favorite Vata-balancing meals is this Pumpkin Protein Oatmeal. It features warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, hearty oats, grounding pumpkin, plus almond milk for moistness. The egg whites and chopped nuts add protein and good fats


3/4 cup old fashioned oats

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup pumpkin puree

1/2 cup liquid egg whites or 4 egg whites from whole eggs

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice

pinch of sea salt

Chopped nuts and honey – optional


  • Heat almond milk, water, and spices on medium-high heat. Whisk in pumpkin puree and bring to a slight boil.
  • Add the oatmeal and turn the heat to low until the liquid is absorbed.
  • Add egg whites and stir until cooked through.
  • Top with chopped nuts or honey.
