DSC_0182Jan Cokinos is relatively new to the Flow teaching staff. She brings a terrific energy and a great deal of experience and wisdom. We are so happy to have her join us at the Flow Blog. So without further adieu, here’s Jan!  

FB: How’s life?

JC: Life is ever changing, full of surprises around each corner and I am embracing it all 🙂

FB: Please give us a little more about your background in general. Are you originally from the Loudoun area and what’s your family life like?

JC: I moved here a year ago from Bethesda, MD where I lived for 23 years to be closer to my corporate job, but I am now again teaching Yoga FT and I love it. During my time in Bethesda, I raised three children (whom I live for) and had my own studio in my home. Glad to be here!

FB: What’s your background as a yoga teacher? With whom and where have you studied? What have been some of the more memorable experiences in your teaching journey?

In the flow yoga - 64JC: I started teaching fitness at age 17. Found yoga during an 18 year marriage that was falling apart. I started by studying Anusara, Iyengar and Yoga Therapy. I always knew I was going to be a vinyasa teacher, but wanted my students to be safe, so I learned everything I could about alignment first. I am now studying with Faith Hunter and will receive my 500 hr certification in August 2015. Some of my favorite teachers are Doug Keller, Shiva Rea, Faith Hunter and Dana Trixie Flynn. I aspire to include elements from all of these great teachers in my classes.

FB: We enjoy your teachings tremendously, but tell us a little more about your own personal practice? How frequently are you able to get on the mat and what is being a student all about for you?  

JC: My personal practice is so essential. It gives life to my teaching. It is where I create and where I give back to myself. I do something everyday, even if it is just a bit of meditation.

FB: How did you first get introduced to Flow Yoga?

JC: When I moved here I needed a place to practice. I started taking classes and they were ALL good. My previous business was called In The Flow Yoga, so I resonated with it immediately.

FB: We love your videos – you’ve got an incredible following. What was your inspiration for this idea and what has the process been like for putting these together?

In the flow yoga - 50JC: My inspiration was to do something online so that my students could practice with me anywhere. I am comfortable making videos and also want to connect with as many people as possible. Thank Goodness I already was fairly computer savvy. It can be frustrating on that side sometimes! 🙂

FB: How do you maintain a conversation with such a large audience?

JC: I try and post videos that anyone can get something out of. I’m planning to be posting more regularly now, so get ready for more to come!

FB: Do you have ‘regulars’ in terms of your online classes?

JC: I have 4000 subscribers. I would have a lot more, but stopped posting regularly about 2 years ago. I have a 30-minute Vinyasa practice on there that was very popular. If you subscribe, you get notified when I post a new video. It is like “following” someone on Instagram.

FB: Are you thinking about expanding your online offerings? If so, what are some other ideas you’re thinking about?

JC: Yes, I have added little spiritual talks I call Spirit Nuggets to my channel and may be doing some collaborations with other You Tubers. I’m also working on getting on other online sources for yoga as well.

FB: Any other yogi’s in the family? Do they take your classes?

In the flow yoga - 07JC: My son, Zack started practicing at age 2 before I did even! He inspired me. He could stand on his head with no hands by age 5. My daughter, Katiana just started practicing with me regularly at the studio. You may see her around. My other daughter, Elaina has an incredible spiritual practice and teaches me something new everyday.

FB: What’s your favorite pose?

JC: Right now? Handstand.

FB: What makes a great yoga playlist?

JC: Any music with a good beat and rhythm that you can move to. I always enjoy inspiring music with a good drum beat, but it’s also essential to have something meditative for those all-important, savasana-type tracks

FB: Any pets in the family? If so, what are their names?

JC: Two doggies who are also Best friends to me and each other! I have a Westie-Poo named Lily and a Beagle named Ginger.

FB: Last by not least, your email signature has a very inspiring quote: “The future is not some place we are going, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made” -Unknown. We were wondering how you came across it and what it means to you. 

JC: That email signature quote is something I ran across in 2007 as I was pulling myself up by my bootstraps, getting out of an 18-year marriage with no one to support me in the process but myself. Those words helped get me through it. And I came out on the other side with a brand new life and it was the one I wanted to create for myself : teaching yoga , being free and having the time to continue to nurture my kids. Powerful.
