Ever wish your body came with an instruction manual? I know I do. I have spent so much time trying to decode my body’s messages to me in years past. Most people don’t know this about me, but I was a very sickly child and young adult. I have asthma and allergies. I am prone to headaches and hypoglycemia. I am anemic and had cystic acne for years. Worst of all though were the sinus infections that I would get multiple times a year – so bad that I would have to miss work/school with fevers. I have been on multiple rounds of powerful antibiotics to try to get this under control. I tried proscriptions, allergy injections, over the counter stuff, really EVERYTHING short of surgery. Nothing worked.  Then, I found yoga and Ayurveda (the sister science that deals with the body, health, and wellness). There, FINALLY, I found some useful information that I could apply to my own personal situation.

Did you know that according to Ayurveda we all fall into certain body/personality types? There are seven total and we all fall somewhere along that spectrum? Just knowing where you are on it let’s you know what you are more prone to feeling and where you are more prone to fall out of balance.

To use myself as an example, I am Vata/Pitta (Air/Fire type) – this means I am prone to dryness (that my body then tries to fix by adding more of its own liquids in the form of mucous and sebum – hence the sinus infections and acne), being chilled (and the combo of cold and dry sets me up for asthma), constipation (which can cause headaches), and anger (a symptom of hypoglycemia) when I am out of balance. I knew this before Ayurveda of course, but now I know WHY it happens to me and I have the tools to keep myself in check when I feel things start to swing out of control.

Following my studies in yoga and Ayurveda, I have been sinus infection free for more than 6 years! I have also not had to use my inhaler in that same amount of time. My acne has all but cleared up (it comes back when my eating gets out of whack) and I am no longer constipated – even when I travel! My headaches too are a thing of the past for the most part. I can’t say I “cured” anything, but I did learn how to manage being me and that has led to an increase in my overall sense of health and well-being.
